Was looking for info on Solid State Drives, wondering when they might become more affordsable, and found this interesting report.

Be warned if you are not interested in Data rates, etc.. you probably won't be interested in this.

I'm always suspicious of research that quotes Wikipedia as a source. tongue
In fact, it seems like the speed improvements aren't huge - certainly not worth the 4x price hike unless you're on an unlimited budget.

Once they reach near terabyte capacities at the current price for a good 256gig SSD - Then I will say it is worth while. As it is now, to have one simply as a "main drive" or "OS drive" is not for me, and I would quickly fill it up. Sure you can organise it perhaps in such a way to use one along side a traditional HDD; but then you may start juggeling and be more hassel than its worth smile

The speed they offer of mechanical is certainly very noticable (x2 or 3x at a push at current), and can only improve along side (perhaps not always inclusive) of the increase of the capacity.

I'll be using traditional HDDs for the next year I reckon before I can justify the purchase of a SSD for my needs.
